History of Kurten Cemetery

According to the family story, when Henry Kurten’s second daughter died in 1868, he couldn’t bear to have her buried at the old cemetery as it was a significant distance from their home. His first daughter had been born and passed away while he was gone on a freight hauling job. She was buried with other family and neighbors in the Schultz Cemetery several miles away. His second daughter passed away when she was only two years old. He carried her tiny body for days searching for the right place. He chose a spot on a gentle rise, visible from their log cabin. Over time, more family members were buried there and it became the final resting place for the community.
